Tottenham travel to Gent on Thursday night, aiming not only to bounce back from their defeat at Liverpool, but also to keep their hopes alive for some silverware.
Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent often simply known as Ghent or by their nickname De Buffalos is a Belgian football, track and field hockey club, based in the city of Ghent, East Flanders. The club was founded in 1864 making it one of the oldest sports clubs in Belgium. At first the club was known under its French name La Gantoise(and it is still referred to as such in the french-speaking part of Belgium). They changed their name to the current Dutch version in 1971. The football division opened in 1900 when the football section of the college of Melle joined officially the club; their nickname De Bufallo’s is a reminiscence of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Circus visit in the city, in the early 20th century.
Gent have been playing in the Belgian Pro League since the 1989-90 season. They won the national league once, in 2014-15 plus three Belgian Cup victories. Their best achievement ever in European competitions, is the 1991-92 UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Ghent played their home matches in the Jules Ottenstadium from 1920 until 2013, when they moved to their current home Ghelamco Arena. The team colors are blue and white and their principal sponsor is the financial institution VDK KV.
Gent and Tottenham will meet for the first time and the local team understand that they will face a strong opposition but the stats are on their side; the English team played several times in Belgium, but they only drawed or lost( D3 L2) .
Genk’s manager Hein Vanhaezebrouk guided Gent to the Belgian title in 2014/15 and helped his side to reach the UEFA Champions League round of 16 last season.
