Since Kevin Trapp’s signing, the hostilities between PSG’s goalies are running high. Nicholas Douchez, number two goalkeeper( 15 games past season) fired the first, complaining about the German’s arrival without being informed. (Oh dear, doesn’t he read the press?) Nevertheless the Frenchman has not only indicated his displeasure but he also asked explanations from the Parisian club. When they told him that he should not feel targeted from this appointment, it was easy to understand that it would be number’s one Salvatore Sirigu time to pack his bags.
One thing is certain; Trapp, Sirigu, and Douchez is the story of an impossible threesome that will oblige one of them to throw the towel and quit. The Italian goalkeeper is more likely to leave, even if his contract goes untill 2018 for he lost Laurent Blanc’s faith in his ability to help the club progress in the Champions League contest. The French coach, during a TV interview was very clear about it “I’m expecting my goalkeeper to be decisive in these games, but that didn’t happen during PSG’s Champions League campaign” he said.
The Italian custodian arrived in the Parisian Capital from Serie’s A Palermo for only 3,895 M Euros ( July 2011) and his performances in Ligue 1 were saluted by the French medias. He even won twice the Trophée des Champions (2013 and 2014). But let’s not be shy; Ligue 1 is good/average so it’s easy for a good/average player to shine. The big test is during the European Cups and also the national games; despite Sirigu’s youth(28 years old) he was unable to take Gigi’s Buffon place, he’s not even close to!
Sirigu is very popular among PSG’s faithful and many of them will be sad to see him go, for he’s a nice fellow, but accident prone: not good with his feet, neither with his head and sometimes he just drop the ball in front of some opponent’s feet !
The player is still on holiday, but he gave an interview after the season’s last game: “Absolutely, he said to Telefoot ” I see my career developing in Paris, without the slightest problem.” Will he now nourish other plans ?
While Roma (latest rumor, is an offer of 11 M Euros) will reportedly vie with Napoli and maybe Internazionale, for his services, Liga’s FC Valencia is now a new contender as Premier League’s Tottenham( if/when Hugo Lloris signs to Manchester United.) Any favorite destination?
Meanwhile, Paris president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, cited Trapp’s excellent aerial ability”a complete goalkeeper who is very strong in the air and who has great reflexes on the goal line”. Was it a subtle dig at Sirigu’s lack of these qualities ? The Italian has the fourth-worst mark among keepers for failing claims and ranks 97th in Europe’s top 5 Leagues(1.80 claims per 90 minutes.)
PSG’s Head Coach Laurent Blanc, wants to regenerate the Parisian squad this summer and add more competition in several positions as the goalkeepers; for Sirigu the writing is on the wall: stay and fight for his number one jersey or seek new adventures elsewhere !
